Les inventeurs du "space rock". Le mot a été crée pour eux. Le groupe fondé par Dave Brock (guitares, synthés, chant) fête ses 40 années d'existence discographique en 2010. Heavy metal mêlé de synthétiseurs, ou musique complètement planante basées sur ces même synthés, déclamations poétiques et dramatiques sur fond de bruitages électroniques, chansons et instrumentaux déjantés et hypnotiques ou plus mélodiques, et même quelques morceaux rock ou pop, world music, electro, ambient, Hawkwind a touché à tout.
